About Halal
Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted by Shariah law. The opposite of halal is haram, which means unlawful or prohibited. Halal and haram are universal terms that can apply to all aspects of life. However, we use these terms largely in relation to meat products, food products & ingredients, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal care products and food contact materials.
The following foods are considered haram, or prohibited:
• Pork and its by-products
• Animals improperly slaughtered or dead before slaughtering
• All types of Alcohol, intoxicating drugs, blood
• Carnivorous animals, birds of prey, reptiles, pests and certain other animals
• Foods that are contaminated with any of the above products
All other foods are considered halal, or permissible. To assure that the proper care and supervision is taken, especially in the case of meat products, the Muslim consumer relies on Halal Supervision Agencies..
